The 37th edition of the Zunheboto Area Sports Association (ZASA) Kukami Trophy was officially launched on January 7 at District Sports Council Ground with a grand opening ceremony graced by K. Tokugha Sukhalu, Honourable MLA & Advisor for Food and Civil Supply, Legal Metrology, and Consumer Protection, Government of Nagaland, as the Chief Guest. The sports event is scheduled to run until January 11, bringing together 13 Teams from across the Zunheboto area to compete in various sports including Football, Volleyball and badminton.
In his inaugural address, Sukhalu emphasized the vital role of sports in today’s fast-paced world. He highlighted that engaging in sports not only promotes physical fitness but also opens doors to a range of career opportunities. "Sports teach essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience—qualities that are valuable in any profession," he said. "Beyond being an athlete, the sports industry offers career paths in coaching, management, medicine, marketing, and more, with the potential for rewarding and fulfilling livelihoods."
Sukhalu further encouraged the youth to view sports as a potential career, urging them to embrace the journey, develop their skills, and take advantage of the vast opportunities available in the sports industry. He concluded his address by stressing that sports contribute to a healthier lifestyle and a stronger community.
The ceremony also celebrated the legacy of Dr. T. Ao, the first Naga Olympian, who made history as a football genius and is remembered as a trailblazer for Naga athletes. Sukhalu also referenced other prominent sports figures, including Mirabai Chanu, the weightlifting sensation from Manipur who won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Baichung Bhutia, an iconic figure in Indian football, and Hokato Hotozhe Sema, Nagaland's first Olympic medalist, who won a bronze in Men's Shot Put at the Paralympics.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Ito S. Chophy, General Secretary of ZASA. Akukau Khekuto Zhimo, Chairman of the Zunheboto Tokukujo Kukami Hoho, delivered a welcome address, emphasizing that while winning is important, the values of discipline, sportsmanship, and good conduct are paramount in today's sports culture.
A special presentation by Fame Steppera Crew and Botokali T Yeptho which added excitement to the event, while the invocation was led by Aboka K. Sumi, Pastor of Sheyipu Baptist Church. The ceremony also included the oath-taking of athletes by Yepeto Awomi, Games and Sports Secretary of ZASA.
