12th Marsosang Football Trophy underway

The 12th edition of the biennial Marsosang Football Trophy got underway today at GHS Chuchuyimlang organized by Rocky Club Chuchuyimlang with Nagaland PWD Housing & Mechanical Minister, Tongpang Ozüküm as special guest. A total of 12 teams are participating in the tournament divided into four pools with 3 teams in each pool.

The Marsosang Trophy is the second biggest football tournament in Mokokchung after the MDFA Trophy and has been played over the last 25 years since 1994. Champions of the current edition will be awarded a prize money of Rs.1,50,000 while the runners-up will be awarded Rs.75,000/- with the two semi-finalists being awarded Rs.10,000/- each.

The tournament is being sponsored by the family members of Late Marsosang, 1905 – 1994, who was a prominent citizen from the village of Chuchuyimlang and a pioneering businessman in Mokokchung town, and organized by Rocky Club.

Tongpang Ozukum while speaking at the inaugural function expressed appreciation to Rocky Club for their perseverance, adding that many clubs in Nagaland are formed only to be relegated into oblivion after a few years, and hoped that the club would continue to grow stronger. He also said that the tournament has over the years proved to be the launching pad for many renowned local players, while also encouraging the youngsters to develop the spirit of sportsmanship and discipline. He also urged them to consider pursuing professional football.

The inaugural match of the tournament was played between Axel FC and Medemsanger United which ended in a 2-2 draw.
