The Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) today accorded a befitting reception to the team of “39th Hours to Kohima: An Endurance trek through the Naga Hills” which reached at Kohima after touching Kikruma, Jessami, Losami of Phek District.
This event marks the “39th Hours trek through the Naga Hills undertaken by Allied Force from Jessami to Kohima for the battle of Kohima.
In Kohima, speaking at the programme, Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) Medozhatuo Rutsa said “Today, we gather in solemn remembrance of a pivotal moment in history—the Battle of Kohima, a battle that not only shaped our land but also left an indelible mark on the world stage. We honor the courage and resilience of those who fought in this conflict, a conflict that saw two superpowers, Britain and Japan, clash in the Naga Hills during World War II. “
He said that the course of history was changed on 4 April 1944.
“Let us reflect the word of Medo-o Keretsü’s speech on the event of the 75th Anniversary of the battle of Kohima. As we reflect on those harrowing days, we remember the immense suffering endured by our people. Kohima was reduced to ashes, and countless lives were lost, forever altering the course of our history. It is through this struggle that Kohima emerged on the world map, recognized not just as a battleground but as a symbol of endurance and sacrifice,” he said.
The KVYO extended gratitude to Charlotte Carty and her team for undertaking the “39 Hours to Kohima” endurance trek.
Your dedication to commemorating this battle and honoring those who fought is truly commendable, Rutsa said adding” It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the lessons we must carry forward. We wish for mutual respect and understanding among all nations. We hope that the sentiments of the Naga people are recognized and honored, and that we can move forward in a spirit of reconciliation and peace.”
In a world still grappling with conflict, let us be steadfast in our commitment to peace. May we strive to build bridges of understanding, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past lead us to a future where harmony prevails, Rutsa added.
Let us remember the lessons of history, honor our ancestors, and work together towards a world where peace reigns, he added.
