Dilong Ward secured their place in the finals of the 6th Mokokchung Inter-Ward Football Tournament 2025 after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win over Mongsenbai Ward in the first semi-final held at Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Wednesday.
The tightly contested match ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation time, with neither team able to break the deadlock during extra time.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Dilong Ward kept their nerves intact, converting all five of their spot-kicks. The decisive moment came when Dilong’s goalkeeper, Imtisashi, denied Mongsenbai’s fifth attempt, sealing the victory for his team.
Match Highlights:
Dilong Ward took an early lead in the 14th minute when Takotuba capitalised on a defensive lapse, sending a well-placed cross into the net, leaving the Mongsenbai goalkeeper stranded. However, Mongsenbai responded strongly, and in the 36th minute, Imshimong converted a corner kick to bring the game level at 1-1 before halftime.
The second half saw Mongsenbai dominate possession, pressing hard for a breakthrough, but Dilong’s defense held firm. Despite both teams creating chances, neither could find the winning goal in regulation time. A tense 10-minute extra-time each side followed, but the deadlock remained, leading to a penalty shootout.
Dilong, aiming for their maiden title, will now face the winner of the second semi-final between 2023 champions Sangtemla Ward and Sungkomen Ward, scheduled for April 3. The title decider is set to take place on April 5 at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex.
