The Alempang Futsal Turf was officially inaugurated on March 7 at Alempang Ward, Mokokchung, with Colonel Gaurav Singh, SC, SM, Commanding Officer of the 164 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) Naga, as the special guest.
The futsal turf was completed at an estimated cost of Rs 40 lakh.
Welcoming the gathering, Maongtula, Councillor of the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC), held that the facility is more than just a playground and termed it a “beacon of progress, a platform for dreams, and a testament to unity.”
Expressing hope for the youth, she highlighted how the turf would help reconnect them with physical activity, teamwork, and healthy competition in an era dominated by digital distractions.
Advisor for Water Resources, Tongpang Ozukum, meanwhile, acknowledged the key role played by Col Singh in realising the project.
He also extended his gratitude to the Ladybird School Society for providing the land and expressed optimism that the facility would benefit not only Alempang Ward but also neighbouring communities.
He further hoped that, with government support, additional developmental initiatives would be undertaken in the area.
Speaking on the occasion, Col Singh attributed the success of the project to divine blessings.
He highlighted that the 164 Naga Territorial Army is unique as it comprises personnel from all 17 Naga tribes.
The futsal turf was developed under “Operation Sadbhavana,” an initiative by the Indian Army aimed at positively impacting local communities, the Commanding Officer informed.
While highlighting the abundance of talent among the Nagas, he pointed out that the primary challenge lies in the lack of infrastructure.
To this end, the special guest encouraged the community to make the best use of the facility and expressed his hope that it would serve as a valuable asset for local development and sports promotion.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Lemasashi, Chairman of Alempang Ward Yimden, followed by a dedicatory prayer led by Rev. Ngangnen Lkr, Pastor of Alempang Baptist Church.
As part of the inaugural celebrations, an exhibition match was held between the Alempang Youth Association and Alempang Ward Yimden, officially marking the beginning of sporting activities at the newly inaugurated facility.
