Five players in national radar
DIMAPUR, AUGUST 16 (MExN): Aphuyemi Football Club from Nagaland bowed out of the ongoing 2024-25 Futsal Club Championship in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, after failing to qualify for the knockout stage.
Placed in Group A, Aphuyemi FC finished third with six points from four matches, registering two wins and two losses. The team scored 22 goals but conceded 37.
Their campaign began with a 4-17 loss to Juggernaut FC (Gujarat) followed by a 6-13 defeat against Minerva Academy (Punjab). They bounced back with a 4-1 win over Reallona FC (Ladakh) and sealed another victory by edging Triumph FC (Himachal Pradesh) 8-6.
Aphuyemi striker Akumyanger emerged as one of the top scorers of the tournament, netting 12 goals.
Despite their exit, five players from Aphuyemi FC have been shortlisted for the national futsal squad, club president and head coach Shiyeto Wotsa said.
Organised by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the championship features 17 teams divided into four groups. The top two teams from each group qualify for the quarterfinals. The tournament kicked off on August 3 and will conclude on August 18.
