Kohima, August 27 (MExN): ATMA Sechu Zubza block conducted a field day, training and demonstration programme at Dzulerudi, Khonoma on August 24.
During the programme, Methaheto Chase, Farmer friend of Khonoma Village who is a seasoned farmer and has been practicing farming under the patronage of ATMA, Kohima district spoke on “Alder based cultivation”. He said that agricultural crops co cultivated with Alder forms a very remunerative agroforestry system. He also highlighted that alder cultivation is a model of sustainable land-use because it does not require high soil fertility and hence, conversion of wasteland into agricultural land through this system is very efficient.
Ketsivino Nakhro, ATM gave a demonstration on “Cultivation practices and pest disease management of winter crops”. She highlighted on the importance of management practices to prevent and protect crops from pests and diseases. On-site demonstration using cultural methods to mitigate pests and diseases using sticky traps and using botanicals such as garlic and neem were done.
Field day on nursery bed preparation of carrot, coriander and broccoli was also conducted where the importance and need of raising a nursery bed was highlighted by Ketsivino, ATM. Farmers were trained on the various cultivation practices and plant protection measures for better growth and productivity of the crops. She also highlighted on how farmers should take a frontal role during such a time like this to help meet the food requirements of the state.
This was followed by discussion and feedbacks. Seeds were also distributed to the participating farmers.
