
Dimapur, March 21 (MExN): The Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio has mourned the demise of former minister Khukivi Awomi who died this morning at Referral Hospital, Dimapur.
The CM in a condolence note stated that late Khukivi Awomi was an active student leader and a social worker. He held the position of the president of Surumi Students’ union and vice president of Suruhoto Range Students’ Union. He also held important positions in the then UDF and NNDP organization.
“He was elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from Suruhoto constituency as an NPC candidate in 1989 general election and had worked together as colleagues. During his political career, he served as an minister of state holding various portfolios. He had contributed many for the Naga people as a whole. His passing away is a great loss to the people of the state in general and for Semas in particular,” he stated.
He also stated in the note that he and his wife convey heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.” May his departed soul rest in eternal peace.”
In a separate note, the Naga Council Dimapur has expressed shock to learn of the sudden demise of Khukivi Awomi, former Minister and ardent social worker on.
The council in a condolence note stated that late Khukivi Awomi, besides a retired legislator, has served the society in various capacities. He was associated with activities of Naga Council during the crisis at Wungram in 2007 which he alongwith Naga Council and Pastors helped in averting aggravation of arson and mob violence. His contribution was remarkable in the success of Naga Council’s 60th anniversary celebrations in 2009 which is billed as a breakthrough in establishing a bond among the multifarious culture of Dimapur.
“His voice against the rampant attacks and killings in the township during 2008-09, his initiative in upholding the spirit of oneness amongst all tribes and reconciliation among political groups are highly appreciable. In his death, the Nagas have lost a courageous leader which will be difficult to replace. We convey our profound condolences to the bereaved family and pray that God Almighty will grant peace and solace to the family. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
