A community-driven effort to strengthen rural education was marked with the inauguration of an additional classroom at Government Middle School (GMS), New Pangsha, and the launch of the Rural Education Mission (REM) at the Council Hall on August 4.
Deputy Commissioner of Noklak, P Mono Khiamniungan, NCS, inaugurated the newly constructed classroom and formally launched the Rural Education Mission, an initiative aimed at improving educational opportunities and learning conditions for students in rural communities.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said that education in many rural areas remains at a foundational stage and commended the community for taking collective responsibility to improve the quality of education. He expressed optimism that such initiatives would contribute to long-term educational progress.
He underscored the need to strengthen village schools by ensuring the availability of essential infrastructure and learning facilities. He also encouraged parents to enrol their children in local schools and make effective use of the educational resources available within the village.
Describing education as a shared responsibility, Khiamniungan highlighted the important role of churches in supporting educational development and called on Anganwadi workers to continue strengthening early childhood care and education, which he said forms the foundation for children’s future learning.
Presenting an overview of the Rural Education Mission, Head Teacher M. Hanga said the initiative, launched in 2026, seeks to improve learning both at home and in school through community participation. He said the mission would support underprivileged students by providing basic educational materials, study furniture, solar lamps for households without electricity, and academic guidance.
The mission also aims to enhance parental involvement through awareness programmes, organise sector-wise tuition classes, recognise outstanding students, and conduct educational exposure trips to improve learning outcomes, he added.
During the programme, Hanga also recited his self-composed poem, “O My World, Reclaim Me,” reflecting on the changing world and the struggles faced by economically disadvantaged people.
Area Education Officer, Noklak, B Ngon, appreciated the community’s active participation in establishing the project, noting that Pangsha, despite being one of the country’s frontier villages and facing numerous challenges, had demonstrated a strong commitment towards improving education.
The President of the All Pangsha Students’ Union described the Rural Education Mission as an initiative that extends learning beyond the classroom. He spoke on the socio-economic challenges faced by the village and urged parents to encourage their children to benefit from educational facilities available locally rather than sending them outside the village. He also appealed to the School Education Department to consider the transfer of teachers to strengthen educational services in the area.
