The Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation, Town Unit, organised a cleanliness drive at the DDSC Stadium on July 31. The drive was conducted in commemoration of the Tsüngremmung festival, an Ao Naga traditional festival celebrated in the first week of August.

The drive was held under the banner ‘Our City, Our Festival, Our Responsibility, Let’s Clean Up.’ Members and volunteers gathered at 6:00 AM for the exercise, which was followed by a short programme.

DAYO Town Unit President Jangjilong Longchar said the initiative was taken to contribute to the community. “Prelude to any festivals, we clean our homes and surroundings. And as a citizen of Dimapur, we want to show our love and care for our city in a small way to our city, Dimapur,” he said. Longchar noted that waste management remains a concern for Dimapur.

“Garbage is a big worry for a fast developing city like Dimapur. The truth is that the administration and the government agencies alone will not be able to solve this. Garbage is everybody's problem and everyone's responsibility,” he said.

He added that community participation was key and referred to traditional practices. “During times of festivals, the (village) council would collectively initiate repairs and constructions in the community. Let us inculcate discipline and responsibility like our forefathers did,” he said. The organisation also acknowledged the work of groups such as Better Dimapur and DUCCF.

Dimapur Municipal Council Members P Sashi Longchar and Neingutoulie Kengruse also addressed the gathering.

According to the DAYO, the drive was aimed at promoting health, hygiene and sanitation.
