Dimapur Veterinary dept issues advisory to contain swine fever

Dimapur, December 18 (MExN): Following the recent reports of African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks in pigs in several districts of neighbouring Assam, the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) Dimapur, Dr Sentinungla Ao has issued a ‘public advisory’ for pig farmers, traders and stakeholders in the piggery sector.

The advisory noted the contiguous border of Dimapur with Assam and urged to the adopt precautionary measure such as certification of health status by the veterinary officials from the place of origin while purchasing live pigs for breeding and farming or table purpose as well as pork for meat purpose to prevent the import and spread of ASF to Dimapur. 

Farmers have been urged to remain alert and strictly follow all advisories issued by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services. “Cooperation of every farmer is crucial to contain the spread of ASF in the state,” the advisory added.

What is ASF? 

•    A highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs

•    100% mortality once infected

•    Causes huge economic losses to the farmers 

•    No available vaccine or treatment

•    ASF is not a Zoonotic disease (does not affect humans)

Transmission: 

•    Through direct contact with infected pigs, pork, or contaminated feed, water, clothing, tools, vehicles and equipment

•    Human movement and illegal transportation of pigs and pork also contribute to spread

Symptoms to Watch For: 

•    High fever, loss of appetite 

•    Weakness and sudden death 

•    Red or blue blotches on skin (especially ears, abdomen) 

•    Diarrhea, vomiting often with blood, coughing, or difficulty in breathing

Mandatory Biosecurity Measures: 

•    Do not introduce new pigs into your farm without proper quarantine

•    Avoid contact with other farms or animals 

•    Regularly disinfect pig pens, equipment and clothing

•    Restrict entry of outsiders and vehicles into farm premises

•    Report any sudden death or signs of illness in pigs to the nearest Veterinary Centre immediately

•    Do not slaughter, consume, or sell sick or dead pigs

•    Dispose of carcasses safely as per veterinary advice
