DMC appeals for Civic Sense

Dimapur, March 15 (MExN): The Dimapur Municipal Council has appealed to the citizens of the city to at least have some respect for the society and the environment and keep their surroundings clean.
The Sanitation Branch of the DMC today lamented that the public continues to remain apathetic. Cleanliness of Dimapur is a moral responsibility of every single Dimapur citizen, the DMC said in a message today. “Everybody could contribute their own bit by way of educating one another to have civic sense,” the DMC said.
The council disclosed that it is planning new initiatives to ‘beautify’ the city but “if the public are not co-operative with the DMC, any attempt to beautify the city will be failure.”
“Most of the populace of Dimapur has inculcated a very irresponsible and unhealthy habit of dumping garbage/wastes anywhere they find convenient for them and this has led to a major problem that DMC is finding extreme difficulty to deal with,” the council said.
“Many have become so unhealthy and ignorant that they do not throw their wastes into DMC’s designated bins but wastes/garbage is rather thrown into drainage thereby blocking the drain or at any empty space behind the house/building.”
Another point of discouragement the DMC highlighted was households hesitating even to pay a minimal sum Rs. 10 per month as Sanitary Tax. “DMC is always trying to do its best for Dimapur but even the civic body is helpless when there no cooperation at all from the people,” the DMC lamented.
Likewise, the council said that due to rampant encroachment, drains in Dimapur have become very narrow, choking free flow of water. When the narrow drains are blocked with garbage and waste, the DMC reminded, “it is certain that Dimapur will continue to face water inundation problem during rainy days.” There may be time when the people may have to face severe inundation coupled with outbreak of disease which Dimapur has never experienced before, the council said.
Reminding that dumping garbage and not heeding to the instructions of the civic body is an offence, the DMC said it would be compelled to penalize anyone found dumping garbage and even doing so into the drains.
“Dimapur can surely be more beautiful, clean and healthy and a better place to live if only each and every citizen of Dimapur join hands and ensure to play a small part to have civic sense and be more responsible,” the council stated.
