Dimapur, August 2 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) has extended its support to the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) over its call for the protection of Naga ancestral lands, expressing concern over issues surrounding the Maova village land dispute.
In a statement, the union said it stood in firm solidarity with the concerns raised by the NSF in its August 1 press statement, stating that the Maova village land dispute underscored the growing challenges in preserving and respecting the customary land ownership systems that have long been an integral part of Naga identity and heritage.
The DNSU said ancestral land was not merely a physical asset but a vital component of the history, culture and existence of the Naga people. Any attempt to undermine or disregard customary land rights, it said, posed a direct threat to the social fabric and collective identity of the community.
The union urged the concerned authorities and all stakeholders to respect and uphold customary laws and traditional land ownership practices, take immediate steps to prevent further escalation of land-related disputes, and ensure that the rights and interests of indigenous communities are protected at all times.
It also appealed to all sections of society to remain vigilant and united in safeguarding ancestral lands, stating that collective responsibility and timely intervention were essential to maintaining peace, harmony and justice.
Reaffirming its commitment to the cause, the DNSU said it would continue to stand alongside the NSF and "all right-thinking citizens" in defending the rightful heritage and dignity of the Naga people.
