Doyang Strikers Mokokchung clinched their maiden MDFA Trophy title, defeating Chargers FC 2–1 in a thrilling final of the 27th Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) Trophy 2025 played at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung, on Saturday.
In what was one of the most intense and entertaining finals in recent years, both teams displayed skill, discipline, and tactical quality from start to finish.
The match began with both sides showing attacking intent, but it was Chargers FC who appeared more dominant in the opening half, pressing high and pushing the ball repeatedly into the Doyang box. However, the young side lacked the finishing touch, while Doyang Strikers relied on organized defending and sharp counterplays. Chargers’ goalkeeper Supongnenba pulled off a string of fine saves to keep the game level, as the first half ended goalless.
After the break, Doyang came out stronger and more purposeful. In the 50th minute, a foul by Yangersosang of Chargers just outside the box gave Doyang a free kick opportunity. Though the initial attempt didn’t go in, a momentary lapse in defense allowed Yami Longvah to pounce on the loose ball and slot it past the keeper to give Doyang the lead.
Chargers responded by pushing forward in search of an equalizer. But in the 75th minute, a misplaced pass from midfield fell to Horam, who showed blistering pace as he carried the ball through the middle before calmly sliding it past the keeper to double Doyang’s advantage.
Refusing to give up, Chargers fought back and were rewarded in the 81st minute when Illanger, the semifinal hero, produced another stunning curved volley — similar to his match-winning strike against Telongjem FC — to pull one back and inject life into the contest. Despite mounting late pressure and four minutes of added time, Chargers couldn’t find the equalizer, and the final whistle confirmed Doyang Strikers Mokokchung
The champions Doyang Strikers Mokokchung were awarded a cash prize of ₹2,00,000, the running trophy, and citations, while runners-up Chargers FC received a cash prize of ₹1,00,000, trophy, and citations.
