ECI reviews SIR progress in Chümoukedima, Dimapur; awareness held in Niuland

Dimapur, August 21 (MExN): Secretary, Election Commission of India, Binod Kumar, reviewed the progress of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls 2026 in Chümoukedima and Dimapur districts during review meetings held on August 20 and 21, while an awareness programme on the exercise was organised in Niuland on Friday.

In Chümoukedima, Kumar reviewed the SIR progress at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall on Thursday. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Polan John, NCS, and attended by officials from the Chief Electoral Officer’s Office, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) of 4-Ghaspani-I and 5-Ghaspani-II Assembly Constituencies and other officials.

Kumar urged officials to adhere to the prescribed timeline and complete all SIR-related activities on schedule. He called for solutions to challenges faced by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and stressed the need to ensure that information and awareness about the exercise reached citizens across the district.

Appreciating the work of BLOs, he urged them to update their findings in the application within the stipulated time and discharge their duties diligently to ensure that all eligible voters are represented while maintaining the integrity of the electoral roll.

Polan John made a detailed presentation on the district profile, including the total number of electors, polling stations, rationalisation of polling stations, and training and awareness programmes conducted in connection with SIR 2026.

In Dimapur, a review meeting on the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls 2026 was held at the DC’s Conference Hall on Friday in the presence of Binod Kumar.

Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Dr Tinojongshi Chang gave a PowerPoint presentation on the current status and progress of the SIR exercise in the district.

Kumar highlighted the importance of Enumeration Forms (EFs) and stressed the need for EROs and AEROs to closely monitor the work being carried out by BLOs at the field level. He interacted with electoral officials and reviewed the challenges faced during the field exercise.

BLOs from three Assembly Constituencies under Dimapur were identified for the review. Under Dimapur-I AC, they included BLOs attached to Khel Chakhesang Colony E/W, Bank Colony and Pranab Vidyapith School Area. Under Dimapur-II AC, BLOs from Duncan Village “B” N/W, Industrial Village/Razphuphe-1 DC, Zeliangriang “A” and Government Higher Secondary School were identified. Under Dimapur-III AC, BLOs from Toulazouma, Toulazouma-I and Longsen were identified.

Following the meeting, Kumar visited two polling stations under 3-Dimapur-III Assembly Constituency to assess the progress of the SIR exercise and its implementation at the field level.

Meanwhile, the Niuland District Administration organised an awareness programme on SIR 2026 at the DC’s Conference Hall, Niuland, on Friday to sensitise the public about the ongoing electoral roll revision being undertaken by the Election Commission of India.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Niuland Athsangla, in her welcome address, said the exercise aimed to ensure inclusion of every eligible citizen and removal of ineligible or duplicate voters.

She clarified that Niuland is a full-fledged administrative district functioning without a separate election office and that all election-related matters continue to function under Chumoukedima district as per directions of the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland.

ADC and ERO, Chumoukedima, T Lemlila Sangtam, gave an overview of SIR 2026 and urged community leaders to ensure that no eligible voter was left out and that information furnished to election officials was accurate. She said clean elections were possible only with a clean electoral roll.

ADC and ERO, Medziphema, James Swu, highlighted the implementation of SIR 2005 and 2026 and urged participants to assist and cooperate with electoral officials in enrolling all eligible voters at the earliest.

Meyietele, Assistant Programmer, Election Branch, briefed participants on the SIR schedule, enumeration process and activities to be undertaken. During the discussion, the shortage of polling stations in the Aghunaqa area was also deliberated upon.
