NBCC mourns passing of Naga peace advocate Niketu Iralu

Kohima, August 21 (MExN): The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has mourned the passing of Naga elder statesman and peace advocate Niketu Iralu, describing him as a distinguished moral voice whose life was devoted to non-violence, reconciliation, dialogue, justice and peace.

In a condolence statement, the NBCC described Iralu as a person of uncommon wisdom, intellectual depth and unwavering moral conviction who sought to promote understanding, healing and coexistence rather than division.

The council said Iralu was admired not only for his views but also for the integrity with which he lived and the thoughtful manner in which he engaged with complex issues confronting the Naga people. 

It described him as a repository of experience and wisdom whose counsel reflected intellectual rigour, moral imagination and a commitment to the welfare of society.

The NBCC expressed particular gratitude for Iralu's contributions to the Church and Naga society, as well as his active engagement with the NBCC Peace Mission.

His presence, counsel and guidance enriched the council's discussions and strengthened its pursuit of peace and reconciliation, it said, adding that his interventions often encouraged members to look beyond immediate concerns and consider the broader moral and human dimensions of the Naga people's collective journey.

The council said Iralu's legacy extended beyond positions held or initiatives undertaken, and would be reflected in the values he championed, the minds he influenced, the consciences he awakened and the hope for a more peaceful and reconciled society to which he devoted himself.

The NBCC said his death had created a void that would be deeply felt, particularly by those who had sought his counsel and worked alongside him in the pursuit of peace.

The council extended condolences and prayerful solidarity to Iralu's family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others mourning his death.

It prayed that the bereaved family would find strength in God's grace, comfort in cherished memories and consolation in knowing that Iralu's life of wisdom, service and peace-making had left an enduring imprint on many lives. 

The NBCC also prayed that the values he upheld, including peace, reconciliation, truth, justice and human dignity, would continue to inspire future generations.
