KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 20 (MExN): A four-day Professional Development Programme (PDP) for Science and Vocational teachers was conducted at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, from September 16 to 19.
The programme, aimed at strengthening Science and Vocational education in Nagaland, was organised by the Innovation Hub and Space Education Centre, Department of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry, Bangalore, and the IQAC of Kohima Science College.
A total of 100 teachers took part in the programme in two batches — 50 from government schools and 50 from private schools.
Participants underwent hands-on sessions designed to enhance teaching methodologies, foster scientific inquiry and transform classroom practices.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Temjenwabang, Principal of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, who stressed the need for student-centred, practical approaches in education and cautioned against complacency in a fast-evolving system.
Delivering the background note, Er Onongoto Soleho, Chief Mentor at the Department of Science and Technology, highlighted structural and pedagogical gaps in Science, Mathematics and Vocational education, observing that despite Nagaland’s high literacy rate, students still face challenges in securing admission to premier national institutions. He said the PDP was designed to empower teachers to transform classrooms into hubs of curiosity, experimentation and aspiration.
The sessions were led by MD Peershavali, Teacher Developer from the Royal Society of Chemistry, Bangalore, covering modules on active learning tools, creative experimental activities in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and inquiry-based classroom engagement.
The programme was chaired by T. Wilson, Education Assistant at the Innovation Hub and Space Education Centre. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Sedevikho Chase, Assistant Professor at Kohima Science College.
The four-day programme concluded with a valedictory session, participant feedback and distribution of certificates. Teachers expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn, collaborate and strengthen professional practices.
