Kohima, March 9 (MExN): Consequent upon the tenure of the present Village Councils coming to an end in the next few months, all recognised villages in Nagaland have been called upon to select new Village Council members for the next tenure.
According to a notification issued by the Home Department, the move is in pursuance of Chapter I, Section 6 clause (a) of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978.
The notification stated that the Deputy Commissioner of the respective districts, in terms of Rule 3 of the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Rules, 1979, will issue the necessary notification containing directives to all recognised villages under their respective jurisdiction for the tenure 2026–2031.
It further informed that the selection of new Village Council members will be carried out in accordance with the prevailing customary practices and usages within 15 days from the date of issue of the notification.
The notification also stated that the entire process of selection of the new Village Council members should be completed before April 30, 2026.
The proposed list of members of the newly constituted Village Councils is to be submitted to the State Government through the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland for necessary approval latest by May 5, 2026, it added.
