Kohima, October 29 (MExN): The School of Engineering and Technology (SE&T), Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, organised an Open House Day on Thursday to commemorate its 20th Foundation Day, providing students from local schools and polytechnics an opportunity to explore its academic programmes, laboratory facilities, research infrastructure and technological advancements.

The event was organised by the Admission Committee 2026–2027 and saw the participation of around 20 students from Model Higher Secondary School, Kohima, accompanied by their Physics teacher, Tsüzolü, during the morning session. Two representatives, Ketoulhoukho Kengurusie and Rukuozenuo Mere, from Government Polytechnic Kohima also visited the campus with 17 diploma students from Computer Science and Engineering and Civil Engineering.

The visiting students were introduced to laboratory facilities, teaching equipment, research infrastructure and technological resources available across the School's departments.

The Department of Information Technology showcased a robot prototype that was 3D-printed, assembled and controlled through a mobile application developed by Rishabh Kumar, a final-year B.Tech Information Technology student.

Students also experienced virtual reality using a Meta Quest 3S headset in the Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Laboratory. Visits to the Advanced Computing Laboratory and Machine Learning Laboratories exposed them to emerging technologies and advanced computing applications. A flight simulation demonstration using the PicaSim RC Flight Simulator introduced them to the fundamentals of flight simulation and control.

The Department of Humanities and Basic Sciences demonstrated laboratory equipment, including an electromagnet, Hall Effect Set-up, High Precision Touch Screen, Labwan Cast Iron Vacuum Oven Balance, Millipore Machine, Incubator with Orbital Shaker and Fume Hood. The demonstrations highlighted the role of experimental learning and scientific instrumentation in engineering education.

The Department of Agricultural Engineering and Technology showcased a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer, Texture Analyzer, Sonicator, UV Spectrometer, Vacuum Packaging Machine and Water Quality Analyzer, demonstrating the application of engineering technologies in agriculture, food processing and quality assessment.

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering demonstrated a Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO), Signal Generator with Trainer Kit and Digital Trainer Kit, introducing students to electronic circuits, signal analysis and digital systems.

At the Department of Biotechnology, students explored laboratory equipment, including a Zeta Sizer, CO₂ Incubator, Microscope, Preparative Cum Analytical Chromatography System (Shimadzu HPLC), Bioreactor, Nanofiber Electrospinning System, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE), Biosafety Cabinet, Rotary Evaporator, Thermal Cycler (PCR Machine), Eppendorf BioSpectrometer and deep freezers maintained at –80°C and –20°C. The demonstrations provided an overview of modern biotechnology research and laboratory practices.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering introduced students to its Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Computer Vision Laboratory and High-Performance Computing (HPC) Server Room, highlighting the School's capabilities in advanced computing, artificial intelligence and research infrastructure.

Addressing the students during the morning session, Shanchamo Yanthan, Co-convenor of the Admission Committee, highlighted the challenges faced by students from Nagaland pursuing higher education outside the state, particularly the financial burden involved. He encouraged them to make use of the academic programmes, infrastructure and facilities available at the School of Engineering and Technology.

Yanthan also said Nagaland University, as a Central University, was at par with other Central Universities in the country and offered opportunities to pursue quality higher education within the state.

Dr Imlitoshi Jamir, Convenor of the Admission Committee, said the Open House Day aimed to provide students from Kohima and neighbouring areas with firsthand exposure to the School's facilities and academic environment. He said the initiative was organised as part of the School's 20th Foundation Day celebrations.

Akangjungshi Longkumer, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, briefed the students on the academic programmes offered by the School. He also highlighted opportunities for collaboration between the School and polytechnic institutions in research, academic activities and co-curricular programmes.

The initiative reaffirmed the School's commitment to promoting technical education, strengthening engagement with local educational institutions and encouraging students to pursue higher studies in engineering and technology within Nagaland.
