Grand Master Chess Coaching Camp begins

The first-ever Grand Master Chess Coaching Camp, organized by the Nagaland Chess Association under the aegis of All India Chess Federation commenced at Nagaland Olympic Association Hall, Kohima in the evening. 

The 3-day event will conclude on March 29. 

During the inaugural function, Vekukho Soho, Honorary Secretary, NCA expressed how the state is lagging on Chess and emphasized that the Nagaland Chess Association is now trying its best to organize as much chess events as possible with the objective to uplift the Naga chess players in whatever way we can. 

He said the Senior National Seminar was held for the first time in the month of November 2024 and added that 17 arbiters from Nagaland were qualified. 

The speaker said this was a big achievement for the state observing that there was only one arbiter in Nagaland prior to these qualifications. 

By organizing the first ever Grand master Chess Coaching, Soho hoped that the coaching camp will be a foundation stone for the chess players. 

He meanwhile welcomed the coach who is not only a grandmaster but also one of india’s top chess player, a professional coach and Fide senior trainer.

During the function, he announced a host of events that the NCA will be organizing in the upcoming months.

The Secretary said the first ever Nagaland Open Fide Rating Rapid Chess Tournament eillon April 24 & 25 which is expecting around 200 plus players from around the country to participate in the event. 

In 2026, he said the NCA will also be hosting the North East Fide Rating Chess Championship further adding that the NCA will also be organising bigger chess events in the near future. 

Grandmaster, Fide Senior Trainer and Coach GM Tejas Bakre during his briefing remarked that 2024 has been a golden year for Chess players in India where India has won all considerable number of medals in the Olympics. 

He expressed how the prospects of Chess in India is growing with time and said it is encouraging to see the activities in North East and lauded the Nagaland unit for taking the steps to promote chess. At the same time, he hoped that the state will produce good players in the days to come. 

The three day coaching camp will train players different methods, tactics, calculations and knowledge required for the game of Chess. 

Earlier during the inaugural function, Khrienuo Rupreo, Women Coordinator, NCA led the programme and a word of prayer was pronounced by Sede Nagi, Treasurer, NCA.
