A garden planted this year at the Jubilee Tower public utility centre near New Market junction on NL Road in Dimapur was damaged in a fire late on Monday night. The raised garden bed and several green plants were burned after some unidentified people allegedly set fire to garbage dumped near the site.
The Jubilee Tower, a clock tower with a free public drinking water booth, was established near the entrance to New Market as a community project by the Dimapur Langpangkong Senso Telungjem (DLST) in 2018 to commemorate its Golden Jubilee. The site was once a dumping ground before its transformation into a public utility centre and landmark in the city.
In 2024 and earlier this year, members of the DLST undertook cleaning and renovation work around the clock tower and drinking water booth amid concerns over garbage accumulation.
Describing the act as senseless and discouraging, a member of DLST said the fire has caused damage to the plants and the garden wall they had developed using the union’s own funds as a mark of their love for the city. He expressed disappointment over what they called a thoughtless act by some individuals, underscoring the need for better civic consciousness and maintenance of public spaces.
The Jubilee Tower, which also serves as a public drinking water point, has been regarded as a significant contribution to the city’s infrastructure and aesthetics since its construction.
