Today in commemoration with the World Environment Day, I, not as an environmentalist, but as a concerned citizen, would like to share about the impact of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), how they can create zeal and awareness about healthy environment to the public, taking a positive exemplary work accomplished by an NGO known as Greenpeace.
Greenpeace an NGO has made significant impact especially in the global climate change and other energy policy debates. It is a staunch supporter of the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty (1997) which was made to reduce fossil fuel emissions. Though, Greenpeace was a small step to usher in big change in the global climate change its purpose was that there must be a “50% reduction in fossil fuel emission” to be achieved not later than 2020.
United States being the leader in fossil emission, has withdrawn from the Kyoto Protocol which prompted the Greenpeace to take action against the United States political leaders who fought against Kyoto Protocol.
Greenpeace started a campaign mainly to bring an awareness to decrease fossil fuel since the excess use of fuel leads to destruction of the earth which thus, naturally leads to global warming. Greenpeace campaign started with the objection of oil production in the Atlantic frontiers. Though, the achievement of Greenpeace was not a major achievement they were at least able to stop oil production for a while and thereby, their opinions heard.
Greenpeace as an honoured organisation has its own name for making its view known and circulated at a global level. It has its office opened in 40 countries across the world which makes a powerful propagator about global environmental issues.
Greenpeace main activity is to stop global warming. Greenpeace also campaigns for the protection of flora and fauna and living beings that depend on them. Greenpeace also takes up issues for elimination of nuclear weapons as well as for disarmament and peace. Greenpeace is also involved in creating the toxic - free environment to bring about pollution free environment especially in this generation of products and manufacturing which are full of chemicals.
Moreover, Greenpeace campaigns for the sustainable agriculture to protect biodiversity and to encourage socially accepted norms for social farming. Greenpeace is stationed at Brussels (Belgium).
Though, Greenpeace is the main crusader to stop global warming propagating to save the environment there are other NGOs such as the Friends of the Earth, Sierra Club and the World Wildlife Foundation which also campaign to curb global warming. They have contributed their own sources and knowledge to save Mother Earth. Each of these above mentioned NGOs have their own norms and standards about their campaigns. For instance, Friends of the Earth started its campaign particularly at the local/individual level rather than at the global level. But all of their aims and visions are to stop global warming. Thus, NGOs have their own contributory field by having access to knowledge with governments and companies, making their impact felt ranging from the local to international level.
