Health experts highlight need for early diagnosis of zoonoses

Tuensang, December 13 (MExN): A two-day “Orientation and Awareness Program on Zoonoses” commenced with a day-long CME-cum-Orientation programme on Zoonoses and their Management Challenges on December 11, at District Hospital Tuensang, in collaboration with the CME Organising Committee Tuensang.

It was organised by Centre for One Health–NCDC, NOHP-PCZ Sentinel Surveillance Sites, District Hospital Tuensang, and the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Jalukie, Peren.  

The programme witnessed the participation of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Tuensang, senior specialists, medical officers, and technical staffs of the Integrated Molecular Diagnostic & Research Laboratory, along with invited expert Dr Raghubir Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology, CoVSc & AH, Jalukie.

The CME featured lectures on Animal Bites and Management by Dr Alemwapang O, followed by an in-depth presentation on Melioidosis by Dr Raghubir Singh, who highlighted the hidden epidemiological burden of the disease in the North East and the urgent need for early diagnosis and coordinated response. Dr Mohan, Microbiologist from the BSL-2 laboratory, presented on the topic Challenges in Diagnosis of Zoonotic Diseases, stressing the role of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Dr Singh delivered his lecture on Brucellosis, discussing field observations, diagnostic gaps, and control strategies relevant to both human and animal health sectors. Final session was updates on Palliative Care by Dr L Chensangba and a detailed overview of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Speciality by Dr Imlitemsu Ozukum, MD (PMR), CMO Tuensang. 

The first day programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr Tochi Chang, Nodal Officer of the Sentinel Surveillance Site, NOHP-PCZ, NCDC Project,  District Hospital Tuensang.

The second day was a visit to Noklak district started with an “Orientation and sensitization on Zoonoses” held at the office of the CMO Noklak, where the CMO Dr Victor N C, welcomed the team with his warm address notes. The programme was attended mostly by frontline health workers and veterinary service providers in Noklak. 

Accordingly, the programme witnessed expert lectures delivered by Dr Mohan Sharma and Dr Raghubir Singh. The discussions were around the concept of One Health and Zoonoses, along with highlights on inter-sectoral cooperation and coordination among the various departments. The epidemiologist Dr Kumkiuba also shared his recent experience on the challenges of the surge of various diseases in the region with focus on rising cases of Malaria in the district. 

After the session at the CMO office, the NOHP-PCZ, NCDC Project team accompanied by the CMO, Epidemiologist, District Program Manager and officials of CMO office visited the Indo-Myanmar border, Dan Village and interacted with the community people. 

In this outreach session Dr Mohan discussed on different zoonotic diseases with more highlights on endemic Scrub typhus. Dr Singh briefed on different emerging zoonotic diseases and their veterinary significance. He also focused on the diseases like Rabies and Brucellosis, along with the importance of vaccination for animals.
