Heavy rain, thunderstorms predicted across Nagaland till August 5: NSDMA

Dimapur, August 1 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Saturday issued a weather outlook forecasting increased rainfall activity across most districts over the next four days. It cautioned of possible flooding, waterlogging, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas.

According to the advisory issued by the NSDMA, on August 2, most districts including Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kohima, Meluri, Niuland and Peren are expected to receive light rain at a few places. Longleng is likely to experience moderate to heavy intermittent rainfall, while Phek may witness localized thunderstorms and lightning with light rain. No active weather warnings have been issued for Kiphire, Mon, Noklak, Shamator, Tseminyu, Tuensang, Wokha and Zunheboto for the day.

Weather activity is expected to increase across the state on August 3, with Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Mokokchung and Phek likely to receive light to moderate rain at scattered locations. Kohima, Tseminyu, Tuensang, Wokha and Longleng may experience localized thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by light to moderate rainfall, while the remaining districts are likely to see light rain at a few places.

On August 4, localized thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are likely over Kohima, Longleng, Meluri, Mokokchung, Peren, Shamator and Wokha, while Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Phek, Mon, Niuland, Noklak, Tseminyu and Tuensang are expected to receive light to moderate rain at a few or scattered places.

Scattered intermittent light to moderate rainfall is expected over most districts on August 5, with Tseminyu likely to receive moderate to heavy downpour at a few places.

In view of the forecast, the NSDMA advised the public to remain alert for possible flooding, waterlogging, landslides, mudslides and falling rocks in vulnerable areas, especially during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution while travelling, and the public has been advised to stay updated with official weather forecasts and advisories through the NSDMA Weather website and the SAFER Nagaland App.
