The India Meteorological Department marked World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Day on March 24 at Dimapur Government College.
DIMAPUR, MARCH 26 (MExN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) marked World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Day on March 24 at Dimapur Government College (DGC) with the theme "Closing the Early Warning Gap Together."
The event was organized by the Meteorological Centre (MC) Kohima in collaboration with the Green Campus Committee of DGC.
Nalnish Kumar Chaudhary, Scientist D and Head of MC Kohima, delivered a talk on the theme of the day. He discussed the role of the WMO and IMD in improving the accuracy of weather forecasting and providing early warnings for severe weather events. Chaudhary also outlined the history of IMD and its services, emphasizing its contribution to enhancing weather-related services for various agencies.
Chaudhary elaborated on the current services offered by MC Kohima, including three-hour nowcasting, seven-day district-wise rain forecasts, five-day district-wise severe weather warnings, impact-based forecasting, aviation-related services at Dimapur Airport, Agromet services, and city forecasts. He also discussed future plans for the centre, such as providing block-level rain forecasting and weather warnings, expanding the observational network in Nagaland, and installing an X-band Doppler Weather Radar at DGC. According to Chaudhary, these developments will improve forecasting capabilities in the region and provide valuable data for academic and policy-making communities in Nagaland.
During the program, video clips showcasing the activities of the WMO, IMD, and MC Kohima were presented. The event concluded with a demonstration of instruments used to measure various atmospheric parameters.
Selina Walling, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Science at DGC chaired the event and highlighted the significance of the theme. The principal of DGC welcomed the scientific staff from MC Kohima. The vote of thanks was delivered by Rakesh Kumar, Scientific Assistant at MC Kohima.
