Longleng town will witness a business shutdown and a solidarity rally on October 27 in reaction to the tragic October 25 hit-and-run incident.

According to the Phom Peoples' Council (PPC), the shutdown-cum-solidarity was called in coordination with the Phomla Hoichem (PH) and Phom Students' Conference “to honour the lives lost in the tragic hit-and-run case.”

The solidarity rally will start at 10:00 am at the Longleng Local Ground. It asked all business establishments, educational institutions, schools, and colleges to remain closed during the course of the rally within Longleng district, as a mark of respect and solidarity with the bereaved families.

It said, “Your participation and cooperation are vital to express our collective grief and unity in demanding justice and accountability.”

In a separate announcement, the Phom Students’ Conference directed all business establishments in Longleng town to shut down from 6:00 am to 12:00 noon as a mark of solidarity with the bereaved families. All educational institutions, both government and private, were asked to shut down for the day.

It directed all students from Class 9 and above to attend in uniform, while the general public to turn out in Phom traditional attire.

It appealed “all the citizens to participate in the rally peacefully and in good order.”

12 AR vehicles grounded
Vehicles of an Assam Rifles convoy were targeted by angry mobs following the alleged fatal hit-and-run incident on October 25. Atleast 12 remained grounded in Longleng town as on October 26, of which 6 trucks were said to have sustained various degrees of damage during the angry mob reaction.

The targetting of the military vehicles was preceded by the discovery of an alleged hit-and-run incident earlier in the day. Two youths were found dead on the Tuensang road, between Pongo village and Longleng town. They were on a motorcycle and allegedly runover by a military truck, which was said to be part of a convoy heading towards Assam.

Emotions boiled over later in the evening when a convoy of Assam Rifles vehicles passed through Longleng town. Mobs reportedly began venting their anger at the AR convoy, engaging in stone-pelting. Other vehicles of the convoy, which could pass through, were also reportedly stopped at the Pongo junction and vandalised.

The two victims, T Anba PHom (38 years) and S Chingloi Phom (29 years), hailed from Auching village. Their funerals were held the same day.

When contacted by The Morung Express, PPC President informed that movement of military vehicles in Longleng district will be prohibited till the culprits responsible for the hit-and-run case are apprehended.
