Jalukiekam farmers record strong yield gains with new ICAR rice breeding lines

ICAR scientists and researchers with a farmer from Jalukiekam during the field day on advanced rice breeding lines.

JALUKIE, NOVEMBER 14 (MExN): A field day on Advanced Rice Breeding Lines was organized at Jalukiekam by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, and KVK Peren, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Peren, Nagaland. 

The programme aimed to highlighttheimportance and productivity of newly developed advanced rice breeding lines among farming community. on scientific seed production practices.

The event was graced by HoRC, Dr H. Kalita, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema and Dr Zieleigai Ndang, District Agriculture Officer, Peren, Dr K L Meena, Head KVK Peren and was headed by Dr Harendra Verma, Scientist, ICAR Nagaland Centre; Dr Akshay Ujjwal (SMS, Agronomy).

Dr H. Kalita, in his address, emphasized on timely sowing of paddy crops as well cultivation of early maturing rice varieties to take up timely sowing of rabi crops such as toria, field pea, green peas, sunflower, potato etc. that will eventually assist in enhancing cropping intensity as well over all farm income of farmers. 

Dr Zieleigai Ndang, encouraged the farmers for adoption of newly developed rice breeding lines by ICAR Nagaland Centre for enhancing their productivity and production. He also suggested for sharing with neighbouring farmers and adjacent villagers. 

Dr Harendra Verma, discussed about the yield potential, grain quality and disease tolerance of newly developed rice breeding lines. He also highlighted various attributes of these breeding lines. 

Hunglung, a progressive farmer of Jalukiekam, Peren shared his insights about yield advantage without compromising the grain quality and cooking quality. During the cultivation of these breeding lines, he observed an increase of 63% in yield compared to other commercial varieties grown in his farm. The farmers of Jalukiekam were very satisfied with the performance of these rice breeding lines and ready to take up in larger area in the days to come. Altogether 25 farmers have participated during the programme.
