A meeting was held by the District Election Office (DEO), Zunheboto with the Booth Level Agents (BLAs) from recognised political parties in the district at Zunheboto Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall on July 17.

Speaking at the meeting, Assistant Election Officer (AEO) Bisalee Thonger said that the special revision of electoral rolls, which has been scheduled, is of great importance. The last revision was done in 2005 and that the process of revision is being done for the first time after so many years, he said.

Thonger also added “India being a democracy gives the right to vote to all citizens and recognised political parties have the right to appoint BLAs for maintaining the purity of electoral rolls.”

He pointed out the difference between the electoral roll revision process and Census, which many people confuse about. Preparation and revision of electoral rolls only involve checking whether individuals are eligible for voting and nothing else to do with any development projects or grants, he indicated.

It was told that there are 211 polling stations in Zunheboto district and that BLAs play an important role in the identification and elimination of duplicates from the electoral rolls.
