Journalism must prioritise truth, unity and responsible reporting in times of conflict, as misinformation and fear can spread rapidly, senior journalist Yumnam Rupachandra said on Sunday.
He was speaking at the observance of World Press Freedom Day 2026, held under the theme “Shaping a Future of Peace” at the DIPR Auditorium in Imphal.
Rupachandra, who is also secretary of the Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM), said the observance, led globally by UNESCO, underscores the vital role of press freedom in promoting peace, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Manipur.
He said the theme highlights that peace is built on trust, truth and dialogue, values upheld by a free and responsible press. “In times of conflict, misinformation and fear can spread rapidly, and therefore journalism must focus on truth, unity and responsible reporting rather than division,” he said.
Rupachandra noted that journalists are not merely observers but play a key role in ensuring all voices are heard with fairness and dignity. He called for protection of journalists, promotion of ethical reporting and encouragement of dialogue so that the media can serve as a bridge in society.
The programme was attended by Director of Information and Public Relations, Government of Manipur, Dr Th Charanjeet Singh; president of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), Asem Bhakta; and president of EGM, Khojendra Khomdram.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Singh said the day serves as a reminder of the importance of press freedom and paid tribute to journalists worldwide who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
He described press freedom as a cornerstone of democracy, which rests on the legislature, executive and judiciary, and said the press plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability and maintaining checks and balances when institutions fail to act in public interest.
Referring to Article 19 of the Constitution of India, he noted that while freedom of expression is guaranteed, it is subject to reasonable restrictions. He urged the media to act responsibly, keeping in mind national security, sovereignty, integrity, public order, morality and decency, and to refrain from inciting violence or harming friendly relations.
Speaking on the occasion, Khojendra Khomdram said freedom of speech and expression is not unlimited and must be exercised with responsibility. He emphasised the role of editors in ensuring that news content is truthful, accurate and in the public interest.
AMWJU president Asem Bhakta said that a majority of countries across the world observe World Press Freedom Day and expressed hope that awareness and participation would continue to grow in the coming years.
