Kohima, August 12 (MExN): Deputy Commissioner Kohima B Henok Buchem, NCS, has sought the cooperation of tribal and community leaders in ensuring an accurate and updated electoral roll as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls, 2026, announced by the Election Commission of India.
Speaking at a meeting-cum-awareness programme held at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Kohima, on August 12, Buchem highlighted the importance of grassroots participation in the revision process.
The meeting was attended by presidents and general secretaries of recognised political parties in Kohima, leaders of the Angami Public Organization, representatives of Kohima-based tribal hohos, and representatives of the Kohima Masjid Committee and Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima.
Buchem said the electoral roll is the foundation of the democratic system and stressed the need to keep it accurate and updated. He said the cooperation and coordination of tribal and community leaders were crucial due to their direct connection with people at the grassroots level.
He highlighted two primary objectives of the SIR: ensuring that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll and identifying and reducing inaccuracies, including the deletion of ineligible persons.
Buchem informed that awareness meetings had already been conducted with various stakeholders and community representatives in the sub-divisions and Kohima town. He said tribal and community leaders have an important role in disseminating information and encouraging eligible citizens to participate in the revision process.
Assistant Election Officer, Kohima, Chisho Swu, made a presentation on the SIR of Electoral Rolls, followed by an interactive session during which participants sought clarifications on the revision process, the State DIPR reported.
