Kohima murder case: Nagaland civil societies demand justice

Urge SIT for swift, thorough and impartial investigation

Kohima, October 28 (MExN): The Angami Women Organisation (AWO) has expressed “deep shock and outrage” over the tragic death of a 22-year-old woman, whose body was found near her residence at Old Ministers’ Hill Colony, Kohima on October 25 last.

In a press release, the organisation strongly condemned the “heinous incident” and called upon the law enforcement authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly identified and brought to justice. “Such a gruesome and inhumane act has no place in a civilised society,” the AWO stated.

While welcoming the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), the AWO demanded a swift, thorough and impartial investigation to ensure those responsible for the “barbaric act” are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

“It is imperative that those responsible are held accountable... sending a message that such violence will not be tolerated in our society,” AWO said.

The organisation also expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and appealed to the public to support the investigation process and “remain vigilant against all forms of violence and injustice against women.”

The AWO reiterated its firm commitment to advocate for the safety, dignity, and rights of women, and will continue to monitor this case closely until justice is delivered.

TWUN: Tenyimia Women Union Nagaland (TWUN) expressed deep shock and outrage over the incident, urging authorities to swiftly arrest the perpetrators. TWUN condemned the killing as an affront to humanity and a direct assault on the safety and dignity of women. “It is particularly distressing that this tragedy has occurred in Kohima, a city often recognized and celebrated as one of the safest places for women in India,” it stated. “Such a brutal crime gravely tarnishes that image and reminds us that we must remain vigilant.”

TWUN urged law enforcement agencies to ensure the perpetrator(s) are “swiftly arrested and brought to justice.” It also called upon the State Government to “leave no stone unturned” in ensuring justice is served and such heinous acts are prevented.

The TWUN expressed its condolences to the bereaved family, stating it stands with them in their hour of grief. “No family should have to endure such an unbearable loss, and no woman should live in fear in her own community,” the statement read.

The union further appealed to the public, community leaders, and civil society organizations to join hands in reinforcing a culture of respect, protection, and accountability. “Violence against women is not only a legal issue but a moral and social failure that demands urgent collective response,” it said, adding that Kohima must continue to be a beacon of safety for women. “Justice must prevail,” the statement concluded, “enough is enough.”

ASU: Angami Students' Union (ASU) condemned the “cold-blooded killing of an innocent young woman,” stating that the “heinous and senseless act of violence has no place in a civilized society.” In a statement, the union said the incident has “shaken the collective conscience of the people and created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.”

“Such a society of fear is unacceptable and dangerous especially for students and the community at large and must not be allowed to exist in our land,” the ASU said.

The student body called upon the State Government and law enforcing agencies to take “immediate, decisive and exemplary action against the perpetrator(s) and ensure that justice is delivered without delay.”

It further urged the State Government to “seriously look into the growing concern for the safety and security of its citizens, particularly women and youth” and to take all necessary measures to “restore public faith in the rule of law.” 

Reaffirming its stance, the ASU declared it will continue to stand firm against any act that undermines the sanctity of human life. “We shall not remain silent in the face of such brutality and will persist until justice for the victim is fully served,” the statement read, adding, “Let this tragedy serve as a stark reminder that justice delayed is justice denied.”

AKMWC: Association of Kohima Municipal Ward & Council (AKMWC) expressed shock over the “horrific and most brutal murder” of a young woman, stating that an innocent soul had her “bright and promising future dreams shattered and shortened in a very uncivilized and inhuman manner by evil-hearted perpetrators.”

In a statement, the Council implored law enforcing agencies to “promptly investigate without any delay and unearth the whole truth inflicted by the unscrupulous perpetrators and take stern action befitting to their cruel and horrific act.”

The AKMWC also appealed to all concerned citizens to “extend all possible support and stand in solidarity with the bereaved families. “Let us all unite our hearts in prayers for her families at this hard times of pain and grief.”

Alumni Association SJC: Alumni Association of St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama expressed deepest sorrow and outrage over the tragic demise of its “beloved alumnus,” describing the deceased as a “cherished member of our alumni family and an inspiration to many.”

In a statement, the association said it was “profoundly saddened by this heart-wrenching incident that has taken away a young and promising life,” adding that she was known for her commitment, compassion, and contribution to society.

The association stated that it stands in solidarity with the bereaved family during this time of unbearable loss.

It urged the concerned authorities to undertake a fair and transparent investigation so that the truth may prevail and justice is duly served.

NAYO: Northern Angami Youth Organisation (NAYO) condemned the ‘inhumane act’ and urged law enforcing agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice “under the harshest laws available.” The organisation appealed to “all sections of society, civil societies, and individuals to come together and condemn this heinous crime, which is intolerable in our society.” Expressing solidarity with the victim's family, the NAYO said, “We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and pray that the Almighty brings comfort and solace to them during this dark hour.”

MYO: Mima Youth Organization (MYO) expressed utter shock and disturbance over the “inhuman and brutal murder,” vehemently condemning the barbaric act in the strongest possible terms. MYO said such violence is “utterly unacceptable and cannot be tolerated under any circumstance whatsoever.” MYO stated that it stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and offered condolences and unwavering support during this difficult time. It urged the law enforcing agencies to “swiftly deliver justice and hold those accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

TSUD: Tenyimi Students' Union Dimapur (TSUD) expressed its deepest sorrow and strongest condemnation over the “brutal and tragic murder” of a young woman, stating it was “deeply shocked and saddened by the heinous and senseless act of violence.”

The union said the incident has “taken the life of a young, bright, and promising individual,” adding that such an “inhuman act has no place in a civilized society and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

TSUD conveyed its condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, and friends, adding, “We share in their grief and pray that Almighty God grants them strength and comfort during this time of unbearable loss.”

The student body called upon the law enforcement authorities to initiate a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation to ensure that those responsible for this horrific crime are brought to justice without delay. “Acts of violence must never be allowed to go unpunished, and justice must prevail for the victim and her family.”

The TSUD appealed to the community to stand together in rejecting violence and promoting peace, unity, and respect for human life. “Together, let us build a society where justice and compassion prevail over hatred and brutality,” it concluded.

CSU: Chakhroma Students’ Union (CSU) expressed its deepest sorrow and grief over the ‘tragic and untimely demise’ of a young woman, stating that words “cannot truly express the pain and anguish caused by such a heinous act.” The union extended its condolences to the bereaved family and loved ones and prayed that the “Almighty grant them strength and comfort as they navigate through this unimaginable tragedy.” CSU stated it “strongly condemns this brutal act and stands firm in its demand for justice.” It urged the concerned authorities to leave no stone unturned until the perpetrators are found and brought to justice, adding that the victim’s “life deserves truth, accountability, and justice, nothing less.”

NPWF: National People's Women Front (NPWF) of National People's Party (NPP) expressed grief and deep outrage and condemned in the strongest terms the brutal and heart-breaking murder of a young woman. NPWF said her “untimely and cruel death has shaken our hearts and conscience as a society.” Remembering the victim as “a young girl with dreams, hope, and a future ahead of her — all of which were snatched away by a senseless act of violence,” the front stated that “no words can truly express the pain and anguish we feel at this moment.”

NPWF affirmed it stands in solidarity with her bereaved family, sharing in their sorrow and demanding justice for her.

It called upon the authorities to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the perpetrator(s) face the full weight of the law, adding that “justice delayed is justice denied, and we owe it to her memory to act swiftly and decisively.”

The front said the tragedy is a stark reminder “of the urgent need to create a society where women can live without fear — where their safety, dignity, and rights are protected at all times.”
