A mini-bridge connecting the YBBA Mission Centre, Shiponger and Leangkongru was inaugurated on December 16 in Shamator.
The bridge is expected to ease daily movement for residents, particularly students and commuters who faced difficulties crossing the area during the rainy season due to flooding and slippery conditions.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shihto Shipong, ward president of Shipong-1, said the lack of safe passage had long posed challenges for the community.
“Even after the inauguration of Shamator town, students and the public faced immense problems crossing this area for daily errands,” he said. “Flooding and slippery conditions made the crossing dangerous. We are deeply grateful to Yanba Showuba for responding to our request, providing the necessary materials and overseeing the construction of this much-needed bridge.”
Kiumuhen, president of the Public Forum, said the project reflected sustained efforts to address gaps in essential services in the district.
“As a newly inaugurated district headquarters, there are often shortcomings in basic infrastructure,” he said. “Yanba Showuba has consistently stepped in to meet needs that the government and the Public Forum could not address. His commitment to development and support for the poor predates publicity, and his actions set an example for future generations.”
Addressing the gathering, Yanba Showuba acknowledged development initiatives undertaken by the Nagaland government following the upgradation of Shamator to a district in 2023, but stressed the importance of shared responsibility.
“Shamator is a large district, and depending solely on one MLA or the government is a challenge,” he said. “Each of us must contribute, in our own capacity, alongside the government, district administration and law enforcement agencies, to bring meaningful development.” He also described the bridge as a symbol of unity.
“Just as this bridge connects people and places, let it remind us to build unity among ourselves and with neighboring communities,” he said. “I will continue to do my best within my limited capacity and coordinate with the state government to work for the welfare of the people of Shamator.”
