Abhijit Saikia, a TGT (Mathematics) teacher at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Chukitong, who had been missing since February 8, was found dead on March 7 in a decomposed condition.

According to police sources, the body was discovered by hunters at around 11 am on March 7. It was found in the Jayim River, locally known as Juthum Erü (Three Rivers), situated between N. Longidan and Mungya villages, about 10 km from the school.

Additional SP Wokha, Biren Lotha, informed that the river area is extremely hazardous, with shallow gorges and steep cliffs, which made the retrieval operation difficult for the police. He stated that Saikia might have accidentally slipped into the river and drowned.

After completing all legal procedures, the body, by then badly decomposed, was handed over to the family on Saturday night.

Saikia had been missing for nearly a month, prompting extensive search efforts by the community. On February 12, the Chukitong Range Public Organisation, along with village leaders, students, and youth groups, conducted a search operation. A police-led search followed on February 13, but when no trace was found, the search was later suspended amid speculation that he might have returned to his native place, as the school is located close to National Highway-2.
