Mizoram government extends lockdown to May 31

Aizawl, May 15 (NNN): Lockdown has been extended till May 31 in Mizoram.  An official said that the Mizoram government on Friday extended the ongoing lockdown for two more weeks as it has become necessary to fight the spread of coronavirus in the state.

The decision of the Mizoram government came a day after churches, political parties, journalists, village councils and social organizations in the state expressed the desire for the extension of the lockdown during a joint meeting.  Given the rapid spread of COVID-19 cases in the country, the Mizoram organizations took this decision.

During the joint meeting on Thursday, Mizoram Chief Minister had expressed that lockdown was important for the “safety of the people”.

Since last week, the Mizoram government has been enforcing newly approved “Ordinance for Containment and Prevention of COVID-19” in order to enhance measures on COVID-19 issue.

Anyone violating the lockdown prohibitory order in Mizoram faces “exemplary punishment”. A large number of violators of the new ordinance have been pulled up by the police.
