Call for relief and long-term measures
DIMAPUR, JULY 21 (MExN): Students’ and social organisations, political parties and others have expressed grief over the loss of lives in the July 19 landslide in Mon Town and other rain-related calamities across Nagaland. They extended condolences and solidarity to affected families, acknowledged rescue and relief efforts, and called for timely rehabilitation and measures to address recurring monsoon-related disasters.
Ao Students’ Conference (AKM): The AKM expressed grief and solidarity with the people of Mon district affected by the recent natural calamities and residents of Tuli facing hardships due to flooding.
Expressing sorrow over the loss of lives in Mon, AKM conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. It also noted the impact of flooding in Tuli on homes, infrastructure, crops and livelihoods, including displacement of families.
Calling for unity, compassion and support for those affected, the AKM appreciated the efforts of the district administrations, NSDMA, emergency personnel, security forces, medical teams, volunteers, civil society organisations and churches involved in rescue, relief and rehabilitation.
It urged the authorities to ensure relief and rehabilitation “promptly, transparently, and efficiently” and prayed for the recovery of the injured, safety of those at risk and early restoration of normalcy.
Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA): The YAA expressed anguish over the landslide tragedy in Mon district and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families while praying for the injured and those mourning.
It appreciated the response of the district administration, NSDMA, security forces and volunteers engaged in rescue and relief operations.
The YAA urged the State Government to ensure prompt relief, proper rehabilitation and restoration of essential services in affected areas. It also appealed to the public to remain alert, follow safety advisories and take necessary precautions as the monsoon continues.
Ex-Parliamentarians Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN): The Ex-PAN expressed sadness over the loss of lives, injuries and damage caused by the Mon Town landslide.
While noting that Nagaland is prone to natural disasters, it stated that such incidents were particularly devastating when they occurred in urban areas and resulted in loss of lives and properties. The Association extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured.
National People’s Party (NPP), Nagaland: The NPP Nagaland expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones in landslides and flash floods across Nagaland, particularly in Mon Town, Tizit and parts of Mokokchung and Wokha districts.
It also expressed solidarity with the injured, displaced and those whose properties were damaged, while commending emergency response teams, local administrations and community volunteers.
The NPP maintained that recurring monsoon-related disruptions, road blockages and infrastructural vulnerabilities highlighted the limitations of relying primarily on post-disaster management.
While acknowledging emergency relief and financial ex-gratia as necessary immediate measures, it called for “robust, pre-emptive planning” and urged the State Government to prioritise advanced drainage systems, landslide mitigation along critical highways and climate-resilient civil engineering.
The party maintained that governance must look beyond immediate rescue operations towards creating a safer and more durable built environment.
NPF Central Women Wing: The Naga People’s Front (NPF) Central Women Wing expressed grief over the Mon Town landslide and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families while praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.
It appreciated the response of the State Government, district administration and volunteers engaged in rescue and relief operations, and appealed to citizens to extend assistance to those affected.
