Monsoon alert: NSDMA forecasts heavy rain and thunderstorms

Kohima, August 21 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has forecast active monsoon conditions across the state from August 22 to 25, with light to moderate rainfall at scattered places and a high likelihood of localized thunderstorms and lightning over several districts, according to an official release issued by the NSDMA, Home Department. 

As per the latest district-wise rainfall probability sheet for the five-day rolling period of August 21 to 25, the highest cumulative rainfall probability is indicated over Mokokchung (102.51 mm), Longleng (100.59 mm), Mon (93.58 mm), Tuensang (83.84 mm), Wokha (82.59 mm), Tseminyu (78.35 mm), Peren (71.06 mm), Dimapur (68.30 mm), Zunheboto (59.14 mm) and Kohima (56.15 mm). “Other districts show comparatively lower cumulative rainfall probability during the same period,” it stated. 

On August 22, localized thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by light rain are likely at scattered locations over Chümoukedima, while light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over Dimapur, Longleng and Mokokchung. Localized thunderstorms and lightning with light rain are also likely over Kohima, Peren and Tseminyu, while light rain is likely at a few places over Kiphire, Meluri, Niuland, Noklak, Phek, Shamator, Tuensang and Zunheboto.

For August 23, light rain is likely at a few places over Chümoukedima, Kiphire, Meluri, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Peren, Phek, Wokha and Zunheboto, with light to moderate rain at scattered locations over Longleng and Tuensang, and localized thunderstorms with lightning over Kohima and Tseminyu. The forecast also indicates localized thunderstorms and lightning over Shamator.

On August 24, light rain is expected over Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kiphire, Meluri, Mokokchung, Niuland, Wokha and Zunheboto, while thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are likely over Longleng, Mon, Peren and Tuensang while thunderstorms with light rain are likely over Kohima, Phek and Tseminyu. Localized thunderstorms and lightning with light rain are also indicated over Noklak and Shamator.

On August 25, light rain is forecast for most districts including Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kiphire, Meluri, Niuland, Peren, Phek, Wokha and other areas. Localized thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain are likely over Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Tuensang and Zunheboto. No active weather warnings are indicated for Noklak, Shamator and Tseminyu on that day.

The NSDMA has advised the public to regularly monitor the latest weather updates through the Safer Nagaland mobile application and the NSDMA Weather Portal, follow official advisories, and exercise caution during thunderstorms and periods of rainfall. Motorists have been specifically cautioned to exercise care while travelling, particularly along vulnerable and landslide-prone stretches, as authorities remain on standby though no evacuation or red alert has been issued so far.
