Kohima, October 29 (MExN): Various sports and civil society organisations in Nagaland have expressed profound grief and strong condemnation following the tragic death of a 22-year-old woman basketball player in Kohima on October 25.
In separate statements, the organisations described the incident as a devastating loss for the state's sporting fraternity and demanded a swift and transparent investigation.
Basketball Association Mokokchung District (BAMD) said it was ‘deeply shocked and saddened’ by the loss of a young and upcoming player and state representative. The association welcomed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and urged authorities to ensure the probe is thorough, transparent, and uncompromising.
Southern Angami Sports Association (SASA) termed the act “inhumane and barbaric” and stated that the victim was “an inspiration to many young sports enthusiasts.” They urged law enforcement to ensure the culprits are apprehended and given befitting punishment.
Sümi Totimi Hoho (STH) condemned what it called an “appalling and senseless act” that has “shaken the conscience of society.” STH called for a “transparent, impartial, and time-bound investigation” and emphasised that “crimes against women are an affront to our moral and cultural values.”
Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) expressed “deep anguish” at the loss of the “vibrant young woman.” The organisation urged the state government to “expedite investigations and deliver justice swiftly and in full measure.”
All the organisations extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved family and appealed to the public for unity and restraint, specifically to refrain from spreading unverified information.
