Dimapur, August 13 (MExN): Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir has taken up the grievances of contractual employees working under Prasar Bharati (Doordarshan) in Nagaland with Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw.
In a letter dated August 11, Jamir highlighted the plight of contractual workers serving across the Engineering and Programme Sections of Doordarshan in the state.
The MP pointed out that these employees were recruited through proper public advertisements and formal interviews, performing responsibilities on par with regular staff. Their daily duties include technical maintenance, studio operations, transmission, and programme execution—all critical to uninterrupted broadcast operations.
Despite their long-standing service and commitment, Jamir noted that these contractual workers continue to serve without job security, a structured pay scale, or essential service benefits.
Urging the Union Minister to address the issue on humanitarian grounds, the Nagaland MP submitted a four-point charter of demands:
Formulation of a policy for regularisation and absorption of staff, taking into account their length of service and experience. Implementation of a structured pay scale adhering to the principle of equal pay for equal work.
Assurance of job security for the contractual staff and extension of fundamental service benefits, including EPF, medical coverage, and leave provisions.
Additionally, Jamir called for a special recruitment drive in both the Engineering and Programme Sections for Nagaland to address severe manpower shortages and strengthen Doordarshan’s operational capacity in the state. Expressing hope for prompt action, the MP urged the ministry to take immediate steps to safeguard the welfare of workers and ensure the smooth functioning of Prasar Bharati in Nagaland.
