The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee along with the District Congress Committee Kohima and other DCCs across Nagaland, organized a protest against the proposed Bill to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
KOHIMA, DECEMBER 18 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), along with the District Congress Committee (DCC) Kohima and other DCCs across Nagaland, organized a protest against the proposed Bill to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) on December 18.
A press release issued by the NPCC’s Communications Department stated that MGNREGA is a lifeline for rural communities. It provides guaranteed employment, supports poor families, and enables people to earn with dignity. For many villages in Nagaland and across India, the Act remains the primary source of income during difficult times.
During the protest, leaders and workers warned that repealing MGNREGA would adversely affect farmers, daily wage earners, women, and the most vulnerable sections of society. They cautioned that it would lead to increased unemployment and push many families into deeper hardship.
Speakers also highlighted how MGNREGA has provided crucial support during natural disasters, economic crises, and emergencies. They said repealing the Act would mean turning a blind eye to the needs of rural India.
The NPCC and Kohima DCC strongly demanded that the government withdraw the Bill and protect MGNREGA. They urged authorities to strengthen the scheme through adequate funding and timely payment of wages instead of abolishing it.
