Nagaland extends support to Centre’s GST reform

Nagaland GST revenue grows from Rs 187.57 cr in 2017 to Rs 1076.80 cr in 2024-25

Dimapur, September 4 (MExN): Nagaland Minister of Power and Member of the GST Council, KG Kenye, attended the 56th GST Council Meeting held on September 3 in New Delhi, where he conveyed Nagaland’s full support to the Union Government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) reform agenda.

Participating in the discussion, Kenye thanked the Chairperson of the GST Council and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with the Union Government for what he described as an ambitious initiative. He noted that Nagaland, as a consuming state, has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of GST implementation.

According to the Minister, Nagaland’s GST revenue collection in the first year of implementation in 2017 stood at Rs 187.57 crore. By 2024-25, it had risen to Rs 1076.80 crore. As of August 2025, the monthly average GST collection of the state reached Rs 108.33 crore, compared to Rs 89.73 crore in 2024-25, registering a growth rate of 20.89 percent. He expressed optimism that this trend is expected to continue in the long run.

Kenye declared Nagaland’s full support to the Union’s proposal on rate rationalisation and reforms based on three pillars: structural reform—addressing the inverted duty structure, resolving classification issues, and ensuring stability and predictability; rate rationalisation—reducing taxes on common items and aspirational goods, reducing slabs, and restructuring the Compensation Cess; and ease of living and doing business—through simplified GST registration, returns, and refunds.

The Minister also conveyed appreciation to all three Groups of Ministers (GoMs) and extended support to their recommendations on life and health insurance, restructuring of the Compensation Cess, and rate rationalisation.
