Nagaland Government constitutes commission to revamp reservation policy

Reports expected in six months

Kohima, November 12 (MExN): The Governor of Nagaland has constituted a Reservation Review Commission to examine and submit recommendations on the State’s reservation policy in government employment and technical and professional courses in higher education, aiming to ensure equitable representation of various tribes.

The Commission is expected to submit its report within six months.

The Commission will be chaired by R Ramakrishnan, IAS (Retd.). Other members include the AHODs of the Home, Law & Justice, and Higher and Technical Education Departments, with the AHOD of the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department (DPAR) serving as Member Secretary.

The Commission has been granted powers to access government records and documents relevant to its duties and to call any government official or department to provide briefings on matters related to its terms of reference.

Its key responsibilities include examining constitutional and statutory provisions governing reservations, critically assessing educational and economic parameters for reservation criteria, reviewing the State’s existing policy and its impact, and consulting with apex tribal bodies, students, employee associations, and other stakeholders. 

The Commission will also propose criteria for tribal reservations, determine overall reservation percentages, examine mechanisms to address defined backwardness, and recommend measures to strengthen implementation and monitoring, including technology interventions.

It will be provided suitable office space and logistical support by the Home Department, while the Finance Department will allocate the necessary budget. 

Details of the Chairman’s remuneration will be notified separately, informed a notification issued by Nagaland Chef Secretary.

This decision has been issued with Cabinet approval, superseding the previous notification dated September 22, 2025, it added.
