Investigation into the case involving the rape of an octogenarian woman in Kiphire was on in earnest, according to the police. In the incident, which occurred on June 17, one woman in her eighties, was allegedly raped by a policeman, a next door neighbour.
The accused was subsequently detained and arrested by the Kiphire police the same day.
The accused is an armed branch constable of DEF Kiphire, identified as Heluikie Nsanglung alias Amos (34 years). He was located in the town square not long after the Kiphire Police Station received a complaint about the incident.
As per official sources, the complaint was filed by the family of the victim, immediately after which all check-posts were alerted.
A press release about the incident, posted on the Nagaland Police official social media handles on June 18, stated that the case was registered at the Kiphire Women Police Station under Sections 64(2), 74, 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BSN)/Indian Justice Code based on an FIR about the commission of “sexual assault and rape against an elderly female resident.”
The medical examination of the victim was conducted at the District Hospital Kiphire the same day. Citing “Medico-Legal examination,” the accused was said to be under the influence of alcohol.
As mandated by the new criminal laws, forensic evidence was also collected from the crime scene. “As per the new criminal laws, a forensic team was requisitioned from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Dimapur and the team arrived on the morning of 18/06/26 and has visited and collected forensic evidence from the crime scene,” the release said.
Parallel to the investigation, the accused police constable has been placed under suspension and departmental inquiry initiated, as per the service rules. “Kiphire DEF and Nagaland Police is committed to a thorough and impartial investigation. We assure the public that all necessary legal measures and steps will be taken to ensure early delivery of justice,” the release said.
