Kohima, March 22 (MExN): In the recent past, Nagaland has registered significant progress in the heath sector with support from the National Rural Health Mission.

“Though the health indicators of the state still need improvement, the outcome of our initiatives under the Mission is encouraging,” said Kumar and cited an example the number of patients treated in the hospitals increased from 18,500 in 2005-06 to 46,683 during the current year up to December 2010.
Another important indicator is that institutional delivery has increased from 1182 cases in 2006-06 to 15,625 cases during the current year up to December 2010, the Governor added.
The governor also said that the government has successfully implemented the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), which is health insurance for the poor people. The state’s performance in giving wide coverage within a short time is recognized at the national level, he said.
In addition, while 40,000 beneficiaries have been issued health cards, entitling them to avail free medical treatment worth Rs. 30,000 per year for a family of five, 80, 000 more beneficiaries will be covered in the next three months. The benefits of the scheme for poor people are obvious, he added. However, there is an urgent need to expand the hospital facilities in the private and public sector to avail the fullest benefits that this revolutionary scheme offers, he said.
