Dimapur, December 15 (MExN): The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has announced an increase in the charge for concrete burial grave construction at the New Naga Cemetery in Zani Village, Dimapur, by Rs 1000, effective January 1, 2026.
The decision, taken in an executive meeting on December 1, 2025 was attributed to rising prices of construction materials. The revised fee for a concrete burial grave will be Rs 13,000, up from the previous Rs 12,000. However, the name entry fee for the deceased remains unchanged at Rs 1000, the council stated in a press release.
As per the council's terms and conditions, all graves must adhere to a uniform size of 6 feet by 3 feet. Tomb-roofing and site reservation for future use are not allowed. Families wishing to use granite or marble slabs for grave construction along with an epitaph stand will be informed of the separate cost for such materials.
The council has designated officials for contact regarding burials: General Secretary LK Peter Anal (9612167979) and the Cemetery Caretaker (8787649681).
In a statement, the council appealed for the maintenance of cleanliness during burial services, urging people to refrain from littering the cemetery with plastic bottles, waste papers, and polythene bags. It emphasised honouring the deceased by keeping their resting place clean.
The council noted that the 18 bighas of land were donated by Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio in 2005. With space nearly exhausted, the state government, under the Chief Minister's special approval, purchased an additional 8 bighas of adjacent land this year for extension. The cemetery is intended for the Christian community, and so far, 2716 deceased, including 71 unclaimed bodies from Dimapur and its surroundings, have been laid to rest there.
The statement, issued by Naga Council Dimapur President, GK Rengma and General Secretary, LK Peter Anal, reiterated that the responsibility for the upkeep of both the New and Old Naga Cemeteries lies with every individual, church body and civil society organisation.
