Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland S Supongmeren Jamir on Thursday said allegations that a firearm licence held by the accused in the fatal shooting incident in Guwahati, Assam, was issued by the Nagaland government needed to be verified.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event in Kohima, Jamir said the allegation made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma required authentication before the Nagaland government could be held responsible.

“Until and unless it is authenticated, the Chief Minister should not blame the counterpart State Government,” he said.

Jamir added that the Nagaland Government needed to respond immediately to the allegations and verify the documents.

However, he noted that since the matter involved two State governments, he said, it should be addressed through the respective government machinery.

The remarks came after Sarma reportedly alleged that the gun licence held by accused Ghanakanta Gogoi had been issued by the Nagaland government and not by the Assam government.

Five people, including four members of a business family, were killed and another person was injured in a shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati on Monday night, according to the Press Trust of India.

The incident reportedly followed a dispute between the property owners and the leaseholder over the management of the hotel. Assam Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the shooting.
