NFR boosts DEMU operations, connectivity in Northeast

Maligaon, March 2 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is continuing efforts to enhance rail connectivity, improve passenger convenience and strengthen operational infrastructure across the Northeast and adjoining regions through a series of infrastructure upgrades and operational initiatives.

In a significant development, a Load Box testing facility has been commissioned at the newly constructed DEMU shed at the New Bongaigaon Carriage and Wagon Workshop. The workshop has successfully completed the required electrical modifications, including the provision of cable extensions and installation of an additional panel to enable Load Box testing within the new shed. The upgraded arrangement ensures a safe and reliable power supply for testing activities.

With the commissioning of the facility, Driving Power Cars (DPCs) of DEMU rakes will now be tested within the same shed, eliminating the earlier practice of moving them to another location for Load Box testing. Officials said this has reduced unnecessary shunting operations, minimised time loss due to movement and optimised manpower utilisation, leading to faster turnaround of DEMU rakes and improved operational efficiency.

At the same time, NFR has taken steps to augment and maintain DEMU rakes to meet rising passenger demand, particularly on short-distance and suburban routes. The enhanced maintenance capacity and improved testing infrastructure are expected to ensure higher availability of DEMU services, improved reliability and better punctuality.

The benefits of the initiatives extend beyond railway operations. Increased availability of DEMU services directly supports daily commuters, students, small traders and office-goers across Assam and other North-Eastern states. Improved rail connectivity also contributes to regional economic growth by facilitating easier access to markets, healthcare and educational institutions, while strengthening the integration of remote and semi-urban areas with major junctions.

The NFR said it remains committed to adopting modern technology, upgrading workshop capabilities and improving passenger services in line with the vision of Indian Railways to provide safe, efficient and passenger-friendly transportation. Through continued infrastructure development and service augmentation, the zone is playing a key role in accelerating regional development and ensuring seamless mobility across the Northeast.
