NFR detects over 76,000 ticketless, irregular travellers in July

Maligaon, August 27 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) detected 76,989 passengers travelling without tickets or with irregular tickets during intensive ticket-checking drives conducted across its zone in July 2026.

According to NFR, the drives resulted in the collection of Rs 10.95 crore in fares, fines and excess charges from unauthorised travellers. Of the total detections, 55,988 passengers were found travelling without tickets, resulting in the collection of Rs 8.97 crore in fares and excess charges.

Another 21,001 passengers were detected travelling with irregular tickets, leading to the collection of Rs 1.98 crore in fines and charges.

NFR said it also realised Rs 67.89 lakh through non-penalty cases during the month, while luggage-checking cases resulted in Rs 1.38 lakh in fines.

A total of 313 intensive ticket-checking drives were conducted across the zone in July, with ticket-checking staff covering 2,344 trains.

The railway said the enforcement drives are aimed at curbing ticketless and irregular travel, ensuring proper ticketing practices and improving revenue collection while providing a fair travel environment for passengers with valid tickets.

The cumulative figures for the 2026-27 financial year have also shown a significant number of detections. From April to July 2026, NFR detected 4,14,796 cases of ticketless and irregular travel, resulting in Rs 50.57 crore being collected through fares and excess charges.

NFR said the drives were supported by its Commercial Department, ticket-checking staff and field officials through regular surprise inspections and special checks.

The railway appealed to passengers to travel only with valid tickets, carry proper travel authority and book excess luggage in accordance with railway rules.

It said passenger cooperation would help ensure a safe, transparent and comfortable travel experience while strengthening the efficiency and financial sustainability of railway operations.
