Maligaon, June 15 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Monday said it ensured timely medical assistance to a pregnant passenger who went into labour while travelling on Train No. 15910 Lalgarh-Dibrugarh Avadh Assam Express on June 14, resulting in the safe delivery of a baby on board.

According to an official statement, the passenger developed labour pain as the train approached Rangiya, prompting railway staff to immediately initiate coordinated efforts to arrange emergency medical assistance.

The prompt response of the on-duty train staff enabled the Rangiya Control, Commercial and Medical Departments to mobilise support before the train arrived at Rangiya Railway Station.

A medical team led by Dr Sarat Chandra, Divisional Medical Officer of Rangiya Division, reached the station ahead of the train's arrival. Meanwhile, with the assistance of the coach attendant and Mrs. Krishnama Goldsmith Bezbaruah, a nurse from Jorhat Christian Mission Hospital who was travelling on the train, the baby was safely delivered on board.

On reaching Rangiya station, the Railway medical team attended to the mother and the newborn and shifted them to Rangiya Railway Hospital for further treatment.

As the baby was born prematurely, both mother and child were later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Guwahati, in a Railway ambulance for specialised medical care. Railway authorities said both were reported to be stable.

The NFR described the incident as an example of the dedication and coordinated efforts of its personnel in responding to passenger emergencies and expressed appreciation to Mrs. Krishnama Goldsmith Bezbaruah for her timely assistance during the delivery. It also conveyed its best wishes to the mother and the newborn.
