Maligaon, June 29 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has implemented an advanced Internet of Things (IoT)-based tunnel lighting automation and energy monitoring system at Tunnel No. 9 near New Haflong in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section, as part of its efforts to improve energy efficiency and modernise railway infrastructure.
According to an NFR statement, the system enables centralised supervision, remote operation and real-time energy monitoring through the IR Niyantrac platform, helping optimise energy consumption and improve operational efficiency.
As part of the project, smart metering infrastructure has been installed for tunnel lighting feeders, while field devices have been integrated with the IR Niyantrac platform.
The system allows railway officials to remotely operate and monitor the lighting installations in Tunnel No. 9 and provides live data on energy consumption and the operational status of the lighting network.
NFR said the automation will ensure more efficient utilisation of energy through timely control and continuous monitoring of tunnel lighting. Real-time monitoring of power consumption and system performance is expected to optimise energy use, reduce wastage and promote sustainable practices.
The railway zone said the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to modernise infrastructure and strengthen energy management across its network.
NFR added that the project reflects its commitment to operational excellence, environmental sustainability and the development of modern railway infrastructure in line with Indian Railways' vision of a smarter and greener future.
