Maligaon, June 5 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) observed World Environment Day 2026 with a series of environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives across its divisions and units from May 15 to June 5 under the theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."

According to an official NFR update, railway employees, passengers, students, Scouts and Guides, social organisations and members of the public participated in various activities aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development during the campaign period.

The observance culminated on June 5 with officers and staff from all NFR divisions and units participating in the World Environment Day programme organised by the Railway Board through video conference under the leadership of Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar. Participants also took an Environmental Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection, climate action and sustainable development.

According to NFR, a wide range of activities including plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, awareness rallies, seminars, nukkad nataks, waste management initiatives and public outreach programmes were organised across railway stations, hospitals, colonies, office premises, workshops, training institutes, railway tracks, trains and other establishments under its jurisdiction.

Special emphasis was placed on creating awareness about water conservation, efficient water use, energy-saving practices, waste segregation, e-waste management, recycling and composting in line with the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative. The programmes sought to encourage sustainable habits and responsible environmental behaviour among railway employees, passengers and the public.

Awareness campaigns were also conducted to discourage the use of single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly alternatives.

As part of the observance, extensive cleanliness drives were undertaken at railway stations, trains, colonies, hospitals and office premises to foster a cleaner and healthier environment. Plantation drives were also carried out at Railway Health Units, offices and other railway establishments across the NFR network.

At the NFR headquarters in Maligaon, Scouts and Guides staged nukkad nataks highlighting environmental protection and the adverse impact of plastic pollution. Eco-friendly alternatives such as jute bags, cloth bags and biodegradable products were distributed among railway employees and members of the public.

NFR said it remains committed to implementing environment-friendly initiatives aimed at building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.
